OCC’s rowing team is headed to the nationals

Rowing is a truly beautiful sport. Every rowers is in sync with each other to accomplish the same goal. It is the epitome of team work. The hardworking Orange Coast College rowing team is headed for the Nationals at Lake Lanier in Georgia on May 25th. Team Captain Daniel Amado says that the sport is a powerful tool that can help you overcome any challenges in life. He knows this all too well. In high school he broke a disk in his back, but thankfully was able to return to his beloved sport. During the Nationals boats will cover 2,000 meters in roughly six minutes, not a small feat for anyone. The men’s assistant coach of OCC’s rowing team knows the sport in and out. He gets up at 5:30am about six days a week to make the long drive from Rancho Santa Margarita to Newport Harbor. When 6:30 rolls around practice starts immediately. Only his love and dedication to the sport propels his to continue. Back when he was a student at OCC he was a coxswain for the team. They sit at the back of the boat and yell orders to the rowers. In the 1990’s he was head coach, but had to stop for a while due to family obligations. Luckily he is back at it and better than ever. The sport is called catching more fire as time goes and is a big part of OCC’s history. They have won 11 national titles so far.
